Huntsville Public Library
Volunteerism Opportunities

The Volunteer position is a critical element of the functioning of the library and is intended to be a rewarding experience for both the volunteer and the library.

Adult Literacy Tutor

Huntsville Public Library sponsors the adult literacy tutoring programs in the Huntsville Area. Tutors are needed to help other adults learn to read, or to improve English-speaking skills. A 12-hour training class is required of prospective tutors, and upon completion of the training, new tutors are matched with a student. Tutors meet with students at least once a week for one hour. For more information, call Richard Lane at 936-291-5912.

General Operations Volunteer

General Operations volunteers assist by preparing new materials for circulation, by reshelving circulated materials, by sorting donations, and by helping to maintain collection order. We ask that general operations volunteers schedule a minimum of one three-hour block per week. For further information about becoming a general operations volunteer, please call Terrie Newman at 936-291-5481.

Genealogy Volunteer

Members of the Walker County Genealogical Society man the Dickenson Genealogy Room for at least three hours of each day the library is open. These volunteers assist persons visiting the library in conducting their family history search. For further information about becoming a genealogical volunteer or about the Walker County Genealogical Society, please contact Director of Library Services, Linda Dodson at 936-291-5470 or WCGS President, Johnnie Jo Dickenson at 936-295-5551.
