                                                                                                   History of the Program
                                               In 2003 the Huntsville Public Library assumed responsibility for the administration of the Literacy Program
                                                     originally begun by Don and Fran Weil in 1982. The Huntsville Area Literacy Council began in 1990
                                                   as a non-profit volunteer program designed to teach adults to read and to aid those who wanted
                                                                                          to learn to speak, read and write English.
                                                                                                  

 

Getting Help- Help is available for any adult who wishes to learn.Tutoring is available in basic reading, learning to speak English, or improving existing reading skills. Self teaching computer  programs are available for check-out along with the computer for use in the library. Tutor Information-Become a literacy volunteer! We are looking for individuals with patience, compassion and a decision to make a real difference in the life of an adult learner. If you  are interested in volunteering or wish to learn more about the program, please call Richard Lane at 936-291-5912 or email him at rlane@huntsvilletx.gov .
To be eligible to volunteer, you must:

  •  Be 18 years of age.
  •  Have the ability to read and write in English.
  •  Be willing to commit to tutoring 1 to 2 hours a week for a  year.
  •  Complete Huntsville Public Library's tutor training sessions.
