Texas Summer Reading Program


Why let kids have all the fun? Huntsville Public Library is here to help grown-ups celebrate this summer with Book Squares! It’s a fun summer reading program for adults starting Saturday, June 9, 2018 and ending Saturday, July 28, 2018. Take your reading game to the next level with categories such as “Read a book you chose because of the cover” and “A book out of your comfort zone.” Complete your Book Square to receive a chocolate bar and put yourself in the running for a chance to win the grand prize. The earliest day to turn in completed Book Squares reading log is Monday, July 23.

Book Club

Be part of the adult book club at the Huntsville Public Library! All interested persons are welcome to join in the fun from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. of the 2nd Thursdays of each month. Book clubs are an excellent way to enjoy books, challenge one’s mind, and socialize with other book lovers! Have fun reading a wide variety of books, making friends, meeting like-minded people and stimulating the brain cells! July’s book selection is . This will be followed by a group discussion. Midday Matinee

Join your friends and neighbors for a Midday Movie Matinee beginning Friday, June 1st at the Huntsville Public Library. Screenings of American classic movies will be shown on the first Fridays of each month from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The Midday Movie Matinee will be followed by Family Movie Night at 5:30 p.m. Complimentary popcorn will be served at both events and attendees may bring non-alcoholic drinks in non-spill containers. If attending Family Movie Night, don’t forget your pillows and blankets. Sittercise


Get fit while you sit with Sittercise! Start 2018 off with a new exercise program being offered from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning January 9th at the Huntsville Public Library in conjunction with Huntsville Memorial Hospital. Sittercise is designed to help those who are aging and/or dealing with chronic and other illnesses. It focuses on strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, endurance, and overall improved function. Please consult your doctor before starting any new exercise program. Liability waivers are required to participate and are available from the instructor. The class is free and open to adults ages 18 and older. Texas 42 at HPL


Get in on the fun! Play Texas 42 - a dominoes game similar in style to bridge and spades - at the Huntsville Public Library from 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays. Studies show playing dominoes can be beneficial for the mind as attention to detail and strategy are essential to play.  Come to the Community Room each week and strategize your winning moves. We’ll supply the dominoes and refreshments. Please register in advance here or call Mary at 936-291-5471 for more information. Games will be played weekly if 8 or more players register. This program is for adults 18 years and older.

Frances Sprott Goforth Memorial Genealogy Weekend

The Frances Sprott Goforth Memorial Genealogy Weekend will be held August 3rd and 4th, 2018 at the Huntsville Public Library. This year's event, "Orphan Trains, Adoption, and DNA” is hosted by the Walker County Genealogical Society and the Huntsville Public Library. On-site registration begins at 9:30 a.m. both days with programs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 3 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 4. A light supper will be provided on Friday. A silent auction, open to the public, will be held during the weekend and will end at 4 p.m. Saturday. The event is free but requires registration. Free GED Classes


The Huntsville Public Library will host free GED classes taught by Lone Star College staff (dates to be announced). Students are required to attend Orientation from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 28 to enroll. Students 19 years and older should bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Students 18 years of age and younger, in addition to the ID, need a self-consent form, a parental consent form, and a withdrawal form from their previous institution. Questions? Free ESL Classes


The Huntsville Public Library will host English as a Second Language (ESL) Orientation from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 21. Students are required to attend the orientation to enroll. The classes (dates to be announced) will be taught by Lone Star College staff.
